</span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000">The purpose of the NRPD Community Drug Awareness Resources Site is to provide residents with a place where they can locate a multitude of services as well as find information that is designed to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse; also to provide local, regional and web based resources that can assist residents in areas of drug awareness and treatment and prevention strategies; and to act as a portal for open lines of communication between the police department and the community in an effort to reduce the negative impact of illicit drug abuse.<br />

I believe that this issue is something that must be addressed on a community wide basis. Over the past few years, there have been tremendous changes and progress within the department that we believe will benefit the entire community.  Our main priority is providing the safest environment for our residents to live in, our commuters to work in, and our visitors to stay in.<br />

In 2011, our Department was awarded State Accreditation, an evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession, by the profession. I am most proud of the outstanding reputation our agency enjoys, a tribute to the many fine men and women who dedicate themselves to professionalism and fairness, providing quality services while protecting life and property through community partnerships. Each of our members plays an integral part in the success of our department to ensure that North Reading is a great place to raise a family, go to school, and conduct business. <br />

            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">When a citizen calls 978-657-TIPS, he or she will generally hear a taped message explaining that a detective is not presently   available. However, speak as long as you like, explaining the activity in as much detail as you can. You do not have to provide your name, address, or telephone number. All information is kept strictly confidential.</span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"><strong>What happens to the information I provide?</strong></span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Information is &quot;logged in&quot; and cross-referenced, allowing detectives to determine if additional information related to the criminal activity about which you are calling has been reported in the past. Even &quot;small&quot; bits of information can at times provide detectives the &quot;missing link&quot; that allows them to take action. All information remains confidential, and within the Special Investigations Unit.</span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"><strong>What if I want to speak with a detective directly?</strong></span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">You can leave your name and telephone number on the message and a detective will call you as soon as possible. Again, your name will remain strictly confidential at all times.</span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"><strong>What if I want to report a crime or drug activity that is happening right now?</strong></span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">If you witness a drug crime or any other crime that requires immediate police response: DIAL 9-1-1.             <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"><strong>How can I use the Anonymous Crime and Drug Tip Line most effectively?</strong></span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">1. Speak clearly and don't rush. Take your time leaving your message.<br />
            </span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">2. Be as specific as possible in providing the following information:</span></p>
            <p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Location of the incident: street address of building or house, names of nearest intersecting streets, landmarks near or at the scene. Description of persons involved, such as height, sex, age, weight, clothing, hair color, eye color, skin color, and any distinguishing marks. Description of vehicles involved, such as make, model, color, and license plate.</span><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px"> </span></p>

<p><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">    As Chief of Police, I fully support the North Reading Police Community Impact Team. Since January of 2012, members of our department have partnered with the Town of North Reading Youth Services, School Department, Parks and Recreation and the North Reading Board of Selectmen, in an effort to build a safer community. Community members working together works!<br />
<br />
    We value safety, healthy living and a drug free community. A community wide response is proven to be one of the best strategies to help minimize the overall and social impacts of substance abuse. We’ve dedicated our combined efforts and resources toward combating the social and economic problems associated with substance abuse. Our focus is on the prevention and early intervention of illicit drug use. The success of these efforts will help protect our youth and improve the overall quality of life in our community. <br />
<br />
    What works and what we are doing. We know that success has been seen in communities where coalitions such as ours exist. The Community Impact Team will utilize a comprehensive approach to address quality of life issues by adopting strategies which include:</span></p>
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Drug Awareness Seminars; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Referral services; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Drug and crime tip reporting (text and phone); </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Informative and up-to-date social networking sites; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Distribution of educational brochures; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Community meetings; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Legislative advocacy; </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Public service announcements through NORCAM, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube </span></li>
    <li><span style="font-family:tahoma;color:#000000;font-size:18px">Establishing new standards of open communication with the community. <br />
          </span></li>
