Ellsworth "Seafer"
Croswell was the son of North Reading's first Chief of Police Thomas Croswell.
His father served as Police Chief for over 40 years. Seafer retired as a Sergeant in 1973, and served as acting Police Chief from 1966
to 1967, eventually serving 33 years on the force.
This lifelong resident was extremely devoted to the town where he was born, raised and
educated.
Sergeant Croswell served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he attained the rank of
Sergeant. Sergeant Croswell retired from the Police Department in 1973, and later
became Auxiliary Police Chief.
After retirement he continued as the Owner and proprietor of a very
successful family business which is now operated by his Son John. His many civic activities included, leading the Memorial Day Parade
for 30 Years until he was 79, He also sponsored many School sports
teams and Men's softball teams.
He won the Pride of North Reading Award from the Jaycees in 1971 and in
1999 he was named Citizen of the Year. He was also honored by
the North Reading Council on Aging and the North Reading Rotary Club. He
was one of the founders of the the all-night graduation party at North Reading High,
a tradition which dates back over 40 years. He passed away in 2000 and is remembered fondly by all who knew him. |
